What Is Buch Euchre

Buck Euchre, also known as Cutthroat Euchre, is a variation of the classic trick-taking game Euchre. Unlike traditional Euchre, which is usually played with four players in fixed partnerships, Buck Euchre usually has four players who compete individually. The game uses a deck of 24 cards, of which all the cards should be removed except the A-K-Q-J-10-9 of each suit.

The key differences include:

  • No Partnerships: Every player is for themselves.

  • Scoring: Points are scored individually rather than by teams.

  • Winning: The first player to get to 0 wins the game.

The objective remains similar to the classic version: to win tricks by playing higher-ranked cards than your opponents. However, the absence of partnerships adds a unique twist, making strategy and game play distinctly different from traditional Euchre.

How To Deal

You figure out who gets to be the first dealer by dealing out cards one at a time to each player. The lucky one who gets the first jack becomes the dealer. Once that's settled, the dealer gives the deck a good shuffle. The player sitting to the dealer's right has the option to cut the deck if they want to.

Let's get to the actual dealing. You start by dealing cards clockwise, kicking off with the player to the left of the dealer. In the first round, the first player gets three cards, the next one gets two, the one after that gets three, and finally, the dealer takes two for themselves.

In the second round, you switch it up a bit. The first player gets two cards, the next one gets three cards, while the person to the dealer's right gets two cards, and the dealer also takes three. By the end of these two rounds, everyone should have a total of five cards in their hand.

As for the remaining deck, they're placed in front of the dealer, and the top card is flipped up to form what's known as the "kitty." After each hand, the dealer role moves one spot clockwise, so everyone gets a chance to deal as the game goes on.

Pass or Order Up

Let's break down the "pass or order up" phase in Buck Euchre. Just like in regular Euchre, the player to the left of the dealer kicks things off. They have two options: either pass or tell the dealer to "pick up" the face-up card from the kitty. If the dealer picks it up, they'll need to discard another card, usually one that's not very useful.

club rule

  1. First Round: If everyone, including the dealer, decides to pass, the face-up card in the kitty gets turned face-down.

  2. Second Round: Now, each player gets a chance to choose the trump suit or pass. If all players pass, including the dealer, then there's no trump for that round.

Once the trump suit is set—or if it's a no-trump suit round because everyone passed—players have the option to drop out.

  1. Dropping Out: If you drop out, just place your cards face down in front of you. No penalty points for that.

  2. Special Case: If clubs are flipped up as the potential trump suit, nobody can drop out.

To sum it up, you've got two rounds to set the trump suit, and you can drop out without penalty unless clubs are in play. After that, the game moves on to the next phase.

How To Play Buck Euchre

The gameplay is pretty similar to traditional Euchre, so if you're familiar with that, you're already halfway there. The player sitting to the left of the dealer gets the ball rolling by throwing down any card they like.

Everyone else has to follow the suit led, meaning they have to play a card of the same suit if they've got one. If they don't, they can throw a trump card if one's available. The player that captures the trick, leads the next one.

  • No Trump Scenario: If the round is being played without a trump suit, you'll have to throw an off-suit card.

  • Card Ranking: Keep in mind, if there's no trump suit for the round, an off-suit card won't beat the lead card, even if it's higher in rank. Trumps are the only cards that can outdo other suits.

In a nutshell, you follow suit, play trumps if you can, and if there's no trump suit, you're basically aiming to throw off-suit cards that won't win. It's a straightforward yet strategic game, and if you want to learn more about traditional Euchre rules, I wrote an article that will give you all the information you need.

How To Keep Score

Let's talk about how scoring works in Buck Euchre, which starts off a bit differently than what you might be used to in traditional Euchre. Each player kicks off the game with 25 points, and the goal is to whittle that down to zero. For every trick you win, you deduct one point from your initial 25.

But there are some special scenarios that can shake up the point system:

  • Calling Trump: If you're the one who called trump, you've got to win at least three tricks. If you don't, that's called being "Euchred," and you'll add five points to your score as a penalty.

  • Staying but Not Scoring: If you decide to stay in the round but don't manage to win at least one trick, you'll also add five points to your score.

  • Trump Caller's Penalty: If the player who called the trump suit doesn't win at least one trick, the penalty is even steeper: 10 points get added to their score.

  • Dropping Out: If you opt to drop out of the round, you're in the clear—no penalties for you.

  • Winning All Tricks: Now, if you pull off the impressive feat of winning all five tricks in a round, you've immediately win the game right then and there.

The first player to get their score down to zero wins. But here's a twist: if the player clockwise to the dealer hits zero first, they win the game, even if other players also reach zero in the same round.

So, in Buck Euchre, not only are you playing for a number of tricks, but you're also navigating these special scoring rules, making the game a bit more strategic and exciting.

Keeping score can be a bit tricky for a newbie to Euchre. This Scoring Guide for traditional Euchre will help you along your way.
