Who Deals First

Euchre is a popular card game to play with friends and family and the Euchre rules are not complicated. To play Euchre it involves four players, who compete to win the most tricks or hands. The game is fast-paced and easy to learn, making it a great option for those looking for some competitive fun.

This is the way we choose who deals first in our Euchre group:

  • Someone starts laying out one face-up card at a time clockwise from the person dealing the card.

  • Once a jack is laid that person gets to deal first.

You might be wondering why not just deal the deck out. Being the dealer can be a huge advantage. I'll explain that later in the blog.

Equipment Needed for Playing

All you need is a deck of cards and a few drinks to enjoy this fun and fast-paced card game. If you're looking to take your Euchre game to the next level, having the right equipment can make all the difference.

That's where the EUCHRE BOARD comes in! The Euchre board makes it easy to keep score, tells what trump is, how many games have been won, and even holds your cards.

With the board taking care of the details, you can focus on the fun of playing Euchre and letting the good times roll. Follow this link to get your own board.

The Deck

If you're a fan of Euchre, but don't have a designated Euchre deck to play with, fear not! All you need is a regular deck and a little bit of know-how. The first step is removing the jokers and 2-8s of each suit, leaving you with 24 cards.

From there, you want to ensure that your remaining cards include the A,K,Q,J,10, and 9 of each suit. Once you've made these adjustments, you're all set to start dealing and playing Euchre with your makeshift deck. Who needs a fancy deck anyway?

Why Can Being The Dealer Be An Advantage

Here's an example to help you understand the power of being the dealer in Euchre. Let's say you have the jack and 10 of hearts, an ace and 9 of diamonds, and 10 of clubs. The card in front of you is the jack of diamonds.

Now, usually, the other team won't tell you to pick it up because it's a jack. Your partner passes because they have one low diamond in their hand and they want to leave it up to you to pick it up. So, you get to pick it up and discard your 10 of clubs.

Awesome, now you have the right bower(the highest card) and left bower, the ace of diamonds, and you get to cut clubs right away. You should have no problem getting 1 point, and if you play your cards right and get some help from your partner, you can even get 2 points! Can you see the power that being the dealer can hold?

How To play Euchre

When playing a game of Euchre, the player on the left of the dealer takes the lead by playing any card they want, even a trump card. Everyone else at the table must play the same suit unless they don't have that specific suit. If they don't, they have the option to throw off or cut the hand by playing a trump card.

Now, I'm not going to dive deep into strategies in this blog post. If you'd like to explore more, I recommend checking out my blog on MASTERING EUCHRE STRATEGIES.

Euchre is played clockwise. The lead suit should be monitored by all the players that have one. If the first cards played were hearts, the players must play them as well. A player with no card of suit can play trump cards ("ruffles") or play any outside suit he wishes ("sloughs"). The trick is collected from the team winning and the winner throws the next card.

Here's the deal: The team that calls trump card is known as the attackers. To earn a point, they need to win at least 3 out of the 5 tricks. If they manage to win all 5 tricks, they'll snatch 2 points.

On the flip side, the team that didn't call the trump suit is called the defenders. If they can foil the attackers' plans and prevent them from winning 3 tricks, they'll score 2 points. So, even if you find yourself with a seemingly unfavorable hand, play it smart and you might still rack up some points.

How Trump Is Determined

Once all the cards are dealt the player to the left of the dealer tells the dealer to pick up the face card or pass. It goes around the table to each person. They either pick it up or the players pass until it gets to the dealer.

The dealer can either pick it up or flip the face card down. If the face card is flipped down, it goes around the table again to the dealer's left. They now have a chance to call the trump suit with what they have in their hand(except the suit that was initially not picked). Remember the trump suit beats everything.

If they pass, it goes around the table until it reaches the dealer once more. Depending on how you play, you can either throw all the cards in and move to the next dealer, or you can opt to "Screw The Dealer" - more on that later in this blog post.

How To Keep Score

To keep score in Euchre, you can use the Euchre board by simply clicking on the Euchre board banner above 👆👆 or the Euchre link below to get one. However, if you don't have one yet, don't worry! You can use the numbers 6 and 4 instead.

Here's how it works: after winning your first round, you'll place the 4 face up and cover all of the suits except for one. This indicates that you have 1 point. To keep track of your points, you'll show more of the suits for each point you have. Once you get 5 tricks you'll flip the 6 over and cover one of the suits to signify 5. You'll keep following this each time you get a trick until it totals 10.

I've even created an illustration above 👆👆 to help you visualize this process. It may sound a bit complicated at first, but trust me, it's actually quite simple. That's exactly why I created the Euchre boards - so that you can easily look at it and find all the necessary information you need.

Right Bower

The right bower is an incredibly powerful trump card in Euchre, adapting to whatever trump suit is called and representing the jack - while its partner, the left bower, is also a trump card of the same color. The right bower always wins the trick because everyone has to follow suit led and the right is always the highest-ranking card.

Picture this: your opponents confidently play their left bower, thinking they've won, and then you make your move and slam down your right bower, snatching victory from their hands. It's a satisfying feeling that can turn the tide of the game in your favor.

Left Bower

The left bower is the second-highest trump card in the game. A key strategy for being successful in Euchre is to play the left bower correctly, as this can help your team win trick leads. As such, it's important to strategize by laying down your right bower in order to draw out the left bower from the opposing team(hopefully your teammate doesn't have the left by itself). This will give you an edge and potentially secure a trick lead for your team, which can ultimately lead to a win.

If you possess the left bower, having other trump cards is advantageous so that when someone throws the right one, they won't be able to take your left bower.

Playing Alone

When playing Euchre, there is an exciting strategy called "going alone". After the cards are dealt but before the play begins, a player can choose to call alone. If a player's teammate calls alone, they must play all their cards on their own, without any assistance from their partner.

If the player who called alone successfully wins all the tricks, they will receive an impressive 4 points, which can quickly turn the game around. I recently experienced this firsthand while playing with friends. We were leading 6-0, but when our opponents decided to go alone and succeeded, then they Euchred us and managed to tie the game 6-6 in just 2 rounds, while it took us 6 rounds to gain the same number of tricks. Going alone can truly be a game-changer!

Screw The Dealer

When nobody calls trump in the first or second round and it comes back to the dealer, guess what? They gotta make the call. That's where "screw the dealer" comes in. This little rule keeps the game flowing smoothly and saves us from dealing and picking trump all over again. Easy peasy, right? We love it, and you will too!

Reneging

It's important to be mindful of reneging in Euchre. Reneging occurs when you mistakenly or intentionally throw the wrong suit, typically when confusing a right or left bower for the native suit. While some players might not enforce this rule strictly, it's best to correct any mistakes promptly and throw the correct suit. Remember, intentionally reneging can lead to losing points or damaging your reputation among fellow players. So stay attentive, play fair, and enjoy a smooth gaming experience with others!
